According to CRI, in 2016, total production volume of pork, beef, mutton and poultry was 83.64 million tons, down by 1.1% YOY compared to 2015. Specifically, production volume of pork was 52.99 million tons, down by 3.4%; production volume of beef was 7.17 million tons, up by 2.4%; production volume of mutton was 4.59 million tons, up by 4.2%; production volume of poultry was 18.88 million tons, up by 3.4%. Production volume of egg and poultry was 30.95 million tons, up by 3.2%.
According to statistics of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2016, global production volume of beef was 60.49 million tons while in the corresponding period, China’s production volume of beef was 7.17 million tons which accounted for 11.9% of the globe. In 2016, China imported 579.8 thousand tons of beef, up by 22.37% YOY; total value was USD 2.52 billion, up by 8.41% YOY. Besides, China exported 4.1 thousand tons of beef, down by 11.88% YOY; total value was USD 40.26, down by 9.98% YOY.

Combine data from National Bureau of Statistics and China Customs, in 2016, national apparent consumption of beef was 7.74 million tons, up by 3.68% YOY. The consumption of beef per capita was 5.60 kg in 2016.
According to CRI, the legal import volume of beef in 2016 reached 579,800 tons, increasing by 22.4% compared to 2015, and the import value exceeded USD 2.5 billion.
According to CRI, the legal import volume of beef in China reached 473,800 tons in 2015, 59% increase than 2014. The value of import surpassed USD 2 billion.
